Happy 2015!

What are our New Year's windows all about?

When we wondered what we should show off in our windows for January 2015, we remembered that we had one or two unused 2014 Schwarzie Diaries just waiting for their chance in the spot light. At our end of year Christmas feast in December (in between playing Dirty Santa and eating mounds of delicious snacks) we asked each of the angels to help with 2 tasks...

Task One :  think on an event / happening / circumstance that had occured during 2014 that you would really like to say goodbye to...find the exact day in the diary, tear the page out and to write a quick, private farewell then fold it up into a paper jet and let it go. Then repeat until all the unresolved bits of 2014 have been said farewell to and we all felt lighter and brighter.

Then, after a sip or two of champagne...

Task Two : imagine something that you really want to experience, find, happen during this beautiful, fresh year of 2015...write it down, fold it into an old-school letter and wish it in. And then repeat until the days ahead begin to glitter with hope, possibilities and really good ideas.

Using these precious farewells and wishes, we created our January windows - one saying farewell to the year that has been and one welcoming in the year that is before us.

2015 is going to be full of magical days and nights.
How do we know?
Well, because we wished it in of course!

Happy New Year everyone!

Schwarzie TM launches Nature's Confetti at KIN on Kloof

Astrid & Karen Emma, lovely sister team that is Schwarzie TM, joined creative forces with Ross Symons of White On Rice this month to fill KIN on Kloof's windows with life, colour and nature all in the humble medium of paper.

When we worked with the lovely ladies at Schwarzie for the Remake Challenge we realised their enthusiasm and energy are boundless. They are always up for an exploratory creative project, love collaborations and are open to making custom pieces. It's beautifully obvious that they love every bit of what they do and have built in creating their company.

Ross is quite simply an origami master. We have been following his work and are astounded at his skills - confident that he could trump any origami challenge as to date we have spotted complex creatures like unicorns, halloween pumpkins, dragons & peacocks on his Instagram feed. For November's window exhibition, Ross created the huge origami flowers that grow and thrive in the happy Schwarzie jungle.

To celebrate all things lovely, and just in time for colour-infused summer restyling at home, Schwarzie TM have designed their first range of cushion covers! November's window exhibition announces the arrival of the beautiful Nature's Confetti Range now available at KIN on Kloof.

The #RemakeChallenge : And the winner is...

Nikki from Live Eco opens the evening
After months of watching the fashion designers transform their initial ideas into real, wearable garments and our KIN jewellery designers work to complement their ideas, the winners were announced last Thursday night at an elegant awards evening held at Selections Warehouse in Wembley Square.

And the winners for the fashion section are (...drumroll...)

Leandra du Bruyn - Second Prize (second from the right)

Nicole Smith - Third Prize (third from the right

What a wonderful collaboration it has been! Not only did we grin uncontrollabley with pride as our own KIN jewellery designers did what they do best and presented really gorgeous collections for the competition's budding designers, but we also learned so much about sustainability and buying consciously from Nikki of Live Eco and many of the Remake Challenge's inspiring sponsors and affiliates. We can't wait for next year!

The #RemakeChallenge : Schwarzie teams up with finalist Anke Nel

Dinah Petal Earrings by Schwarzie

It was natural for us to pair KIN jewellery designer Karen Emma Schwarzie with Remake Challenge fashion finalist Anke Nel as both designers share a love for bold line work and rhythmically repeated shapes. The angles and thickness of line in Karen's Deco Dance range complement Anke's clean-cut patterning and appliqued detail beautifully.

Karen is one half of Schwarzie, a sister-made business that is determined to portray life with enthusiasm and colour. Together Astrid & Karen have built their business to uplift and inspire through the stories that their designs inherently weave. Every piece that they make - from a card to a show-stopping necklace follows this ethos and is made with a deep love for what they do.

The bright brass and beautiful design of Karen's pieces conjure up the wealth, elaborate parties, open extravagance and glamour that was at the height of the Art Deco and jazz era in the 1920's. When paired with Anke' chosen materials, the fashion and jewellery pieces open an interesting play and contrast as they echo each other in elegance, but tease our notion of luxury.

Each piece in Karen's Deco Dance collection is carefully cut by hand from brass and polished to a glitzy shine. The pendants & earrings feature sterling silver chains and links. Although inspired by a glamorous past, there is a clean lightness to the designs, making them contemporary translations of the era.

Karen says:
" When I was invited to join this project I was thrilled to have a reason to go all out and make over-sized fashion pieces. Working with Anke Nel was an easy process, we seemed to 'click' and it was a smooth process to design pieces for her outfits. Her designs are modern, and structural with geometric details which worked perfectly with the Deco Dance aesthetic. "

All the pieces in the Deco Dance collection are named after dances and the jazz songs that accompanied them - such as the ‘Charleston’, ‘Lindy Hop’ ‘Margie’ and ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz.’
A charming example is the song that goes with Karen's ‘Dinah-Rose’ designs:
“...Dinah,
Is there anyone finer
In the state of Carolina?
If there is and you know her,
Show her!..."
